Long Eaton and Beeston Joint Event

On Tuesday 13th March Long Eaton and Beeston Round Tables’ got together for a joint event.

Darren Hickling put the invitation out for Beeston to join Long Eaton in a night of Touch Rugby, Fun and Fellowship at the home of Long Eaton Rugby Club.

The evening began with some light warming up, followed by some ball handling skills (yep there is no answer to that!).

Once the rugby club were happy with our lack of ability they threw us in to a couple of games of touch rugby. The first the full length of the pitch, the second just the half pitch size!

We retired to the bar for a couple of well earned beers and a chilli. Whilst there we were treated to a rundown on the current state and future plans for Long Eaton Rugby Club, from their current chairman Chris Brookes.

A great night was had by all, even if a few players were rather stiff the next day, as Rob Digby quoted ‘the only thing not aching are my eye lashes’

Many thanks to Darren Hickling and Long Eaton Round Table for organising and extending the invitation to little ol’ Beeston and thanks to the boys from Long Eaton Rugby Club who made us very welcome and only sniggered a couple of times throughout the night.

Long Eaton Charter

As the last Charter of the table year Long Eaton always goes down well. This year’s guest speaker, having missed last year due to the Icelandic volcano eruption, was Ex-Olympic Skier Graham Bell. Graham gave great insights into his early years, competitive career and current career in television presenting.

In addition to the excellent talk by Graham, Area Chairman Steve Grew inducted two new members to Long Eaton 461, Anthony and Darren.

Long Eaton Round Table Aviation Heroes

Flying Tabler

Tablers from Long Eaton 461 were victorious at the annual Ilfracombe Birdman event over the summer. A team of intrepid aviators built their own man-powered flying machine, and flew the furthest distance off the pier into the sea.

Long Eaton’s Wacky Races

In July the Round Tablers of Long Eaton retired to a secret location well away from any Health & Safety wombles for an evening of messing about in various vehicles. The event – aptly titled Wacky races – put the drivers through various challenges such as driving blindfolded.

The blindfold drive had the driver blindfolded (the clue’s in the name…), with the aim of racing around a tight course in the best possible time. Guidance was provided by the driver’s partner sat on the roof, yelling instructions down through the sunroof. Competition was fierce for this event. Prospective member Joel caused much amusement when sat on the roof as he gave less than useful instructions in the form of pointing while yelling ‘that way’!

Long Eaton goes Ringo!

Taking advantage of the glorious summer evenings, Long Eaton’s finest Tablers – resplendent in wetsuits – had a fantastic evening being pulled around Church Wilne reservoir at high speed holding onto rubber rings.

The odd tabler made an impressive flying departure from their ringos, but Severn Trent water assured the local population that their water filters would cope with the contamination.

After a couple of hours of high speed fun, the boys rounded off the evening with food & drink in a local pub. It was there that someone made the observation that the person we all thought was past Chairman Dave Welch, was in fact one of Dr Who’s adversaries, as this photo shows:

Beeston & District Round Table v Long Eaton Round Table – 3rd Annual Cricket Match

Friday 9th July 2010

On a pleasant Friday evening in July the two teams from Beeston & Long Eaton met at the Attenborough Cricket Club to compete in the 3rd Annual Cricket Match between the two tables.

Long Eaton won the toss and elected to bat first, a wise decision with the fading light playing a major roll in last years outcome. With a smattering of mediocrity cricket on both sides they set a target of 35 to win off 12.2 over’s.

Beeston went in to bat with Dave Liddington taking some key wickets early on. Beeston ran out final winners with 6 wickets to spare.

With the help of some excellent donated and purchased raffle prizes and help from the Long Eaton Ladies Circle we raised in excess of £500.00. The award ceremony lacked the actual cricket challenge trophy, as no one could find it, but in a reverse to the normal Robert Westerman, the losing captain, accepted the return of Long Eaton’s lectern swagged by Beeston at their charter night (1 point to Beeston).

The TeamsMany thanks to Bosco ‘hygenix’ Townsend for catering and donating to the event. The Attenborough Cricket Club for hosting us. Our Area Chairman Steve Grew for attending. Long Eaton Round Table for taking up the challenge and anyone else I may of missed (sorry).
