Men's final

In July Derby Merlin again hosted an extremely successful and fun day of rowing and pulling. Last year’s winners – Long Eaton – did not even make the final of the rowing this year, as the sporting might of Hucknall Round Table pulled off a double by taking both the Area Tug of War trophy and the Rowing title. The event also hosted the ladies of Circle in their own rowing competition.

Fourteen teams from eight tables were entered in the river event: Ashbourne, Beeston, Belper, Derby Merlin, Hucknall, Long Eaton, Swadlincote and West Bridgeford. Hucknall “A” won the final race, with Swadlincote “A” team hot on their tails. Ashbourne “A” and “B” battled out third and fourth places respectively.

Ladies Circle also had a strong turnout – seven teams from six clubs: Ashbourne, Derby City, Derby Merlin, Ilkeston, Long Eaton and West Bridgford. Ashbourne “A” were the eventual winners, followed across the line by Ilkeston, Long Eaton and West Bridgford.

The Tug of War was also hotly contested by a number of clubs. Underdogs Long Eaton surprised everyone by making the final , but were unable to overpower the weighty Tabler’s of Hucknall.
