Beeston’s Summer Community Garden Project

Beeston’s Mike Richardson reports:

“Thanks to all the guys who helped out this weekend with our summer community service project.

“Chris Hughes was a star with the organising. He first surveyed an OAP’s housing area on the Inham Nook estate to evaluate have we could ‘ lend a hand’ in helping with their gardens and general maintenances. After doing a full report and presenting it to the table is was agreed that we would give a Saturday to clear the guttering out of 12 bungalows and redesign 2 overgrown gardens to make them easy maintenance for the elderly owners, we also re planted some boarders or another property.

“With the plan in place we did everything on our power to beg & borrow by any means anything that would help.

“I would like to send a special thanks you to mark and Janine Williams of charlecote plants and flowers for their kind donation of all the bedding plants, we had so many that the other residents were able to help themselves, many thanks.

“Saturday morning came, hang over, and all to start our days work, thanks to Chris Hughes, Andy Moore, Rob ‘Diggers’ Digby, Gary Allison and myself who all looked a little tried and ready for a weekend break. We set to work clearing the guttering first which took 1 hour and told, followed by a good tea break from the lady at no 30. Next the back breaking work of clearing the gardens. The pictures attached are before and after shots. Mrs Fountain & Mrs Fordham were over the moon with the transformation to their gardens so much so that tears were shed (no not because she didn’t like it) we replanted Mrs Mellors garden and donated a hose pipe to her to help with the watering as she has chronic arthritis and can’t pick up a watering can.

“After 2 trips to the skip with a full load, in Alan’s Coats borrowed VW van , some extra gravel & bark picked up we wrapped the whole lot up by 3.oopm to retire to the top house for a well earned pint(s) & cob.

“Many thanks to everyone who helped and to the families who let their other halves have some of their weekend to help those less fortunate.

“I am sure that I can speak for all the guys, who helped on the day, in saying that the sense of well being and seeing the happiness that our efforts brought to the ladies is something that money can’t buy. Lets do it again…………

“Many thanks again for all the effort put in”.
